Project Description:

The Project involved the improvement of approx. 650 m of Georges Street Upper and lower and Marine Road. 2000m2 of paving, street lighting, kerbing, footpaths, ducting, utility diversions, new utilities including water, gas telecoms ESB and sewer.  All the above works carried out in an urban environment with live traffic and pedestrians.

Carriageway Reconstruction

  • Realignment of existing carriageway, Excavation and backfilling with Cl804 constitution and blacktop, Line marking, Excavation of existing footpath approx 4,500m2  and Footpath Reconstruction.


  • Leanmix sub-base, Laying of new 450 x 175mm granite kerbs and channels, Granite cobble carriageway approx 2,000m2 Precast concrete slab paving, Brush hammered granite slab paving (random patterns), Flame textured slab paving, Castlestone paving.


  • Services such as Eircom, ESB, Bord Gais, Chorus, Upgrading of all ESB high and low voltage cable and service ducts approx 1,550m, laying of new ducting for County Council, ESAT Telecom, NTL and Eircom
    Water and Sewerage had to be diverted and new services installed.
  • Foul Sewers: Relaying of 450m of Foul Sewer pipelines using 750mm, 525mm, 450mm and 375mm diameter concrete pipes to replace the existing brick ovoid sewer, Reconnections of existing connections to the new sewer, Overpumping and relining of existing brick ovoid and clay sewers using the following system -GRP Liner – Existing 375mm diameter VC pipe
  • Storm Sewers: Laying 800m of new Storm Sewers using 225mm, 300mm, 375mm pipes, installation of new gullies and associated pipework
  • Watermains: Laying of replacement 150mm, 200mm and 250mm diameter ductile iron watermains approx. 1,000m including transfer of water supply to each premises including associated tie-ins etc. to existing watermains.

The programme of works include:

  • Operation of temporary routing of traffic
  • Diversion of services (as necessary)
  • Accommodation works and works for statutory undertakers.
  • Signs, lines, traffic signals and finishing works

Street Furniture

  • Installation of granite bollards including lighted bolards, granite seats, granite tree surrounds, flag poles, lamp standards, ground lighting, bins and miscellaneous street furniture
  • Extensive Traffic and Pedestrian Management
  • The public were present on and about the works and access had to be maintained to commercial premises and private dwellings throughout the projects. Extensive traffic and pedestrian management was therefore an integral element of the execution of the works
