M7 Nenagh to Limerick High Quality Motorway

This project involved the construction of approximately 28 kilometres of new motorway, the widening of the Nenagh by-pass (approximately 10Km) to motorway and approximately 2Km of new single carriageway to link the M7 to the existing N7 at Birdhill. Grade separated junctions were constructed on the M7 with all associated slip roads at Newport, Coolderry, Carrigatogher and Knockalton (Thurles Road) and the realignment and upgrading of various single carriageway national roads, regional roads and local roads. Coffey Construction was responsible for the design and construction of three bridges as part of this contract.

Nenagh By-Pass Bridge Structures

The project consisted of the construction of approximately 11 kilometres of single carriageway, roundabouts, overlays at tie ins east and west of the by-pass, junction ramps and farm accesses. Drainage, safety fencing, ducting, public lighting, road markings and signage were also carried out.

N20 Croom By- Pass Bridge Structures

The construction of approximately 6.5 kilometres of new single carriageway and approximately 1.5Km of single carriageway side roads. Construction of a new grade separated junction at Croom including two roundabouts. Construction of overlays at tie-ins at each end of the by-pass. Drainage, safety fencing, ducting, works for statutory undertakers, footpaths, road markings and signage were carried out.

N7 Interchange Bridge

N7 Interchange Bridge

The scheme was approximately 4.7 kilometres in length, with further accommodation roads and interchange ramps. There were five roundabouts and a grade separated interchange with the N7 at Kingswood on the scheme. There were also bridge crossings of the Grand Canal and the Kildare Railway Line, together with additional drainage culverts, including a culvert crossing of the river Cammock.

Navan Inner Relief Road & Bridge

Construction of 85m long reinforced concrete bridge over the River Boyne and the construction of new road between the N3 and existing road at Athlumney Heights 1.2 kilometres long. The construction of footpaths and cycle lanes were included in the contract. Surfacing of the 1.2Km carriageway with basecourse and wearing course, white lining and antiskid measures on the bridge deck. Handrailing was installed along the top of the parapet walls. The construction of a new traffic junction including the installation of traffic lights.

This project is part of Irish Rail Limerick-Galway line renewal. The job involved constructing an over bridge to replace two rail crossing used by landowner. Initial works included site clearance of the site, a new access road and fencing of the land for the farmer both temporary and permanent, followed by the excavation for the road into the bridge and associated drainage works.

OB 167 - Athenry Co Galway

Demolition of an existing masonry arch bridge over the railway line and the installation of a new bridge deck. The works were carried out under a possession on the Limerick to Galway line. The bridge was demolished and reinstated over a weekend from a Friday to a Monday under a road closure with additional works carried out in between on the approaches. The bridge services the busy R348 main road from the town of Athenry to Galway as well as considerable construction traffic working on the N6 motorway construction.

OB221 - Templemore, Co Tipperary

The objective of the project was to renew 3 number bridges (UB86, UB96 & UB136) on the Limerick to Tuam line. The existing wrought bridges were replaced by new reinforced concrete decks. The works involved the casting of the new decks onsite using precast units supplied free issue by Irish Rail. Work was carried out under Irish Rail supervision and during possessions.

OB221 - Templemore, Co Tipperary

The works consisted of the renewal of 2 number bridges (UB 158 & UB 161 close to Athenry, Co Galway) on consecutive weekends on the Dublin to Galway Line. A 10 hour possession was given on a Saturday night to carry out the works. The existing wrought bridges were replaced by new reinforced concrete decks. The works involved the casting of the new decks onsite using precast units supplied free issue by Irish Rail. The works involved substantial site set up and clearance adjacent to the existing deck including the removal of all the excavated material from site. Significant ballast retaining walls were installed on the approaches to the bridges as the rail height was increased to reduce the risk of these bridges being struck by high vehicles.

The project consisted of the construction of two under-track crossing for road traffic and pedestrians at McDonagh Station to provide access from the Dublin Road. Irish Rail freight yard was reduced and road access provided via the new underpass. Works also included disabled lift access serving the Dublin Road, upgrading of existing car park, and surface water system and outfall and other associated siteworks.

Mill Bridge Rehabilitation, County Longford

The mill bridge at Cloondara is a five arch masonry bridge in a bad state of repair, both structurally and visually, on the local Killashee to Tarmonbarry road over the River Camlin. A section of masonry wall between arches 4 and 5 was close to collapse leaning outwards due to the continuous heavy traffic. The bridge walls themselves had become overgrown in vegetation. Many of the pavement stones in arches 1, 2 and 3 had become dislodged. A section of the stone wall between the lock (mill pond) area and the river was broken and needed to be newly constructed. The overgrown vegetation was removed from the walls of the bridge. When the bridge walls were cleaned all the bridge walls were pointed using NHL 5 lime and plastering sand.

This project involved the complete refurbishment of an existing RC Bridge constructed across the River Feale in the 1930's. The works included specialist structural concrete repairs including guniting, grouting, sandblasting to beams, columns and deck soffit. Substantial works were carried out below water levels including specialist concrete repairs and underpinning. Coffey Construction was responsible for the design of the temporary working platform over the River Feale.
